As you may have read in my previous blog entry, I'm in the process of rethinking my website and what I want it to provide. I've gotten into the habit of providing nothing more than static content in my previous renditions of corydorning |dot| com, which thanks to godaddy |dot| com, is now corydorning |dot| net (it's a long story). It was the usual about, portfolio, resume, and services information which was rather dry. But after pondering for awhile of what I could and wanted do to make this site more interactive and provide better information, I realized something. My content was dry b/c that's the way I portrayed it.
Now before you scroll down to comment on this entry to let me know that I still have the usual "about, portfolio, resume and services" links, this is important information and it is needed. Although I did try and "spice" it up a little bit. With that said, this is no longer the only information that is provided here. You see, I'm constantly digging into code and trying out new things. Or, if there is an effect I see on the Internet that I like, I'll try to reproduce it for something I could possibly use in the future.
Now what happens if I want to reuse this effect later down the road? Well, obviously I have the effect stored somewhere on my computer (I'm actually pretty organized), but what if I'm not at MY computer? If you're keeping count, that's two questions and no answers. Well to fix this, I've decided to store the reusable effects on my site. Whether it be a CSS, JS, image effect, etc., I'll be able to have instant access to it from any computer with an internet connection. Not to mention, I don't know how many times I find myself stumbling across a new Drupal module and wanting to try it out, but I don't have a place to do it. Thanks to Drupal-out-loud (Drupalol), I now have that place.
The idea behind my creation of Drupalol is simple. It provides me a sandbox to basically sharpen my skills, try out new ideas/modules, and to show capability. Why tie myself to just "completed" work in my portfolio? There are many times where I have done something for nothing more than my very own self gratification, but I've had know way of showing this capability. Down the road, I envision this becoming bigger than "Drupalol" and turning into a wide array of many internet technologies.
In the end, only time will tell but I wanted to share some insight of what I'd like this site to be. The willingness of so many web designers/developers to share their creativity makes me want to do the same. There's no point in recreating something that all ready exists. If I can save someone time by allowing them to reuse something that's all ready been created, I've done my part.
