It was bound to happen. Simply a matter of time. I should've seen it coming. This describes just a few of the thoughts that raced through my head as I watched my iPhone plummet onto the pavement. That and the yelling out of "Oh my Gosh! You have got to be #@%* kidding me!"
Right before my eyes the screen cracked like a ton of bricks hitting a thin layer of ice, in super slow motion. Oh, the pain. The misery. What would I tell my wife? You see, a few weeks earlier she had dropped her first generation iPhone and cracked the screen and I just stared at her in amazement, wondering how she could have done such a horrible thing. I ridiculed her and laughed at the unsightly "spider web" effect she had on the screen of her "precious" iPhone. I knew that once I gave her the news that I had done the same thing, jeering would soon follow. Well that time came and needless to say she returned the favor and is still doing so.
In a two week span we went from 2 state-of-the-art iPhones to 2 state-of-the-art iPhones with cracked screens. You see, the phones still worked amazingly well. We could still make calls, surf the internet and send text messages as much as our little hearts desired. But it was the shards of glass penetrating deep into thumbs that just wouldn't allow us to continue. I called AT&T and they simply told me that my wife could get a new iPhone for $200 since she was available for an upgrade. I, however, was not available for an upgrade so a new iPhone was going to cost me $400!!! More jeering.
After kicking and screaming for about 20 minutes to numerous AT&T reps, I said the heck with them, their plan, and the iPhone. Sure I had to pay an early termination fee of $175 per line, but it was cheaper than spending $600 two new iPhones.
That left me in the search of a new carrier...which as of yesterday I finally decided upon. But that is a story in itself.
Edit: The good news is that I sold my cracked iPhone 3G for $181 via CraigsList. I am going to post my wife's on their soon.

I dropped my iPhone when I
I dropped my iPhone when I first got it (in a parking lot), and I didn't even have a case for it yet. I about crapped my pants three times. When I picked it up, it was fine, aside from a small dent in the side. However, every BAD symbol the phone can have showed up on the screen. Thankfully after a soft reset, everything was fine. With the case on it, you can't even see the dent.
My condolences for your loss. ;)
I'd jump ship too if AT&T pulled that bullshit on me.
Close one...
I guess I was just unlucky. But I'm not sure I'd go testing the durability of these things anytime soon. Glad to see you got through yours okay.
