I'm the proud owner of an iPhone 3G and honestly I don't know what I'd do without it. But as much as I love it, I hate it. I've come extremely close to turning this thing into frisbee, baseball, skateboard and science experiment. I've gone from cool, calm and collected to a raging maniac in less than 3 seconds flat when trying to use it.
With your phone, do you ever get dropped calls? No? Buy an iPhone then. It's like a sick, twisted game of "Hello. Hello? Hello!". I wish I was over exaggerating but this thing drops more phone calls than two cans tied to a string in a hurricane. I'm constantly having to call my wife back, only to get her voicemail b/c she's trying to do the same thing.
Looking for great battery life? Good battery life? Hmm...if you enjoy 30 seconds of talk time and 15 seconds of web browsing, then the iPhone is for you! Okay, so maybe I'm going a bit overboard here, but you should definitely make sure you have a car charger. Because by the time you take it off the charger in your home and walk to your car, half the battery has been used switching back and forth between Edge and 3G.
Ahh, but that's what so good about the revamped iPhone. The 3G offers an unparalleled internet browsing experience at broadband like speeds. Well, I guess it does if your definition of unparalleled is defined as "the same as almost every other smart phone out there". But, this unparalleled-ness only applies if the 3G network is available and in the spirit of being honest, we can all admit that AT&T's 3G network is spottier than a 101 Dalmatians.
All in all the iPhone 3G is very slick looking and works great, but it's two primary selling points for me are the fact that it's a phone and offers the Internet on the go. Seeings as how there are issues with both and the battery life is subpar, it leaves much to be desired. Hopefully with the recent reports that it's a software issue, Apple will release a patch that will at least make these issues bearable.
I'm curious to know if any of you are having the same issues. Please tell me I'm not the only one.

I agree! My b/f has the 3G
I agree! My b/f has the 3G and I have the old (but updated to the 2.0 software) and it's ran like crap ever since! Apple just released a new version of the 2.0 software, but I'm hesitant to update. On vacation, my whole I phone crashed when using the Weather Bug App. It took seven plus restores to get anything to even work. It was very frustrating especially since I was out of town! I noticed my email works like crap now. Sometimes it will kick and kick and kick around in a circle and do nothing until I turn it off and then back on - then the email starts pouring in. UGH!
2.0 great idea but poor implementation
As much as I like the 2.0 software and App Store, it seems VERY buggy, like you said. I just read that 2.0.2 is supposed to fix the issues with the Infineon chip and the problems with switching from Edge to 3G to wireless. Not sure how anyone knows that though, since Apple simply lists the 2.0.2 update to contain "bug fixes" w/o specifying anything in particular.
